'You're not scared of heights are you?': Dad who painted Blackpool Tower spills secrets of the day job
A Blackpool dad has lifted the lid on the secret life of engineers tasked with painting and repairing Blackpool Tower.
The 35-year-old, who describes himself as 'Blackpool born and bred', managed to get himself on the job thanks to a friend who worked for Fairport. "I was just lucky and the guy said to me when he offered me the job 'you're not scared of heights are you?," Sean told LancsLive. "We were repairing and maintaining the structure. So we did a lot of painting, welding and replacing steelwork. We had a team of eight on the tower constantly."
Dad-of-one Sean, who has been out of work for several years after suffering a life-threatening brain haemorrhage, explained the reason why Blackpool Tower is closed when political parties hold their annual conferences in the seaside resort. Once one of the regular destinations for MPs across the political spectrum, until this spring it had been nearly 15 years since party members packed their bags for the Fylde coast.
