With Fred Olsen marking 20 decades sailing from Merseyside, those shaping the city’s cruise industry are hopeful more growth is to come
While Liverpool’s reputation as a gateway to America and a home for iconic ships waned throughout the 20th century, its Pier Head can once again become known for its “great ocean liners” arriving into the city “almost every day.”
From that point, Black Prince offered frequent departures from the city until she left the fleet in 2009. The operator continued sailing from West Langton docks with other ships in the fleet until 2013 before it began sailing from the City of Liverpool cruise terminal where its Borealis vessel is regularly found.
He added: “I believe with some investment and partnership we can grow the business and showcase our incredible region to even more guests. Whether that takes the shape of a new terminal, or just to improve our current facilities - that is what is being discussed at the moment. Hopefully by 2024 there'll be some more clarity on the direction."
Mr Mawer said: "Historic journeys from Liverpool to New York or Boston, the market doesn't exist anymore. So there is very little point putting the effort in to recapture that. [But] in terms of the Pier Head being synonymous with great ocean liners, almost everyday of the year, absolutely we can return to something like that.
The ability to sail into the heart of the city is something that puts Liverpool in a “league of its own” within the UK, matching the offer of destinations cities like New York and Sydney, according to Mr Mawer. And its the welcoming backdrop of the Three Graces that can at times make Mr Mawer’s role "quite easy" - notably with growing interest following Eurovision. But hard work has been put in to retain the support of operators like Fred Olsen, he adds.
