Today marks Merchant Navy Day - an annual celebration to raise awareness of seafarers who have served their country
, councillor Mary Rasmussen, said:"It is vitally important that we remember the sacrifices made by many thousands of seafarers who supported the fight for our freedom. We also remember those who are involved in keeping the world safe today, and particularly Ukrainian marines involved in fighting the ongoing invasion by Russia."
Reverend Canon Dr Crispin Pailing, the Rector of Liverpool who led the service, added:"Our city has a proud maritime tradition, which is why it is vital we commemorate those who served in conflict and have kept our country safe. “It is also important we remember the importance of maritime trade to our city. The ebb and flow of the tide brings with it arriving and departing vessels, all served by seafarers who play a valuable role in safely bringing goods, supplies and tourists to our shore."
