The latest discovery means three new mutated Covid variants have now been detected with a warning that cases are on the rise
A new strain of Covid-19 has been detected in the UK and following its discovery it's vital to be aware of the key signs and symptoms.
As yet, there is no sign that the Pirola strain is any more harmful than those which have been detected previously - although it is thought it might be more easily spreadable. That variant gained its nickname from the fact it is more transmissible than the original Omicron strain, which originated in southern Africa and was first detected in the UK in late 2021.
A small number of cases of the Eris variant have been identified in Northern Ireland. The PHA said the number of people admitted to hospital with coronavirus has risen in recent weeks but still remains at relatively low levels compared with the last two years, "although it may rise further". According to the latest statistics, there has been an increase in the number of confirmed Covid outbreaks in care homes and a rise in the number of community acquired emergency hospital admissions in the current week compared to the previous week.
