.PHE_uk medical director Dr Yvonne Doyle tells Sky News students will have two COVID9 tests in their first week back at school, and given two per week to complete at home 'until at least the end of September'. Latest: KayBurley
More than half of American companies are considering mandating COVID-19 vaccination for employees by the end of the year, a survey suggests.Willis Towers Watson polled 961 firms and found that by the fourth quarter of 2021 more than 52% of employers could have one or more vaccine requirements - up from 21% at the moment.
The World Health Organisation said vaccines developed in Cuba - Abdala and Soberana - cannot be bought for countries in the Americas. People qualify if at least six months has passed since they were fully immunised with either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines. The figures compare with 32,181 infections and 50 fatalities reported on Tuesday and 35,847 cases and 149 deaths announced this time last week.
But those who received the single-dose Johnson & Johnson jab could get a booster shot of Pfizer or Moderna four weeks after they were first vaccinated.About 18 million people are estimated to be eligible for the booster shot, the health ministry said. Nicola Sturgeon said it would be"grossly irresponsible" to rule out the reintroduction of restrictions or another lockdown amid the rise in coronavirus cases in Scotland.
"But if that is to be avoided - as I hope it can be - it will take all of us making a conscious and concerted effort again to comply with all the basic mitigations that we know can slow down transmission." She said:"The Scottish government has made it clear that we do not believe that vaccination certification should ever be a requirement for any key services or in settings where people have no choice over attendance - for example, public transport, education, access to medical services or shops. We continue to hold to that position.
The research looked at almost 7,000 children aged 11 to 17, made up of those who had a positive PCR test result between January and March, and a group who tested negative in the same period. The company said the move was part of a commitment to protect the health and safety of its passengers and crews, as well as ensuring the continued operation of its flights in the long term.József Váradi, CEO of Wizz Air Group said: “At Wizz Air, our number one priority is the health and safety of our passengers and employees. We have a responsibility to protect crew and passengers on board by mitigating the risks of COVID-19, and vaccines play a vital role in this.
The MHRA medicines regulator has already cleared the Pfizer and Moderna jabs for those aged 12 and over on safety grounds, but the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation is tasked with weighing up the pros and the cons of the rollout. The source added that experts have to consider evidence that suggests jabs are less effective at stopping transmission and that children are less likely to become severely ill from the virus.
Scientists are still unsure how long protection from the current COVID vaccines lasts. A study from the Zoe COVID app suggested protection could drop to less than 50% for those first jabbed by Christmas. As such, it is not expected that injection of the particles identified in these lots in Japan would result in increased medical risk," Takeda Pharmaceutical said in a statement.
It is hoped the drug will block the activity of a key enzyme that is needed for the coronavirus to replicate and help halt the virus before it develops. "We already have sensible, safe precautions across the hospitality sector, and with nightclubs already open we have proof that the current set up is working safely and effectively."Sir Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, said his party would oppose the scheme, while Labour previously called it"costly, open to fraud and...impractical".
Around eight in 10 young adults in the UK are now likely to have COVID-19 antibodies, new figures show The ONS figures, based on a sample of blood test results for the week beginning 9 August, suggest antibody levels among young adults have jumped, coinciding with the rollout of coronavirus vaccines to younger age groups.
Professor Tim Sharpe, a member of the Environmental Modelling Group - a sub-group of the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies which advises the government - said good ventilation is a way of "helping to get fresh air in to get rid of the virus where it may occur". This is four times higher than the 139 coronavirus deaths registered in the week ending 21 August 2020.
The discovery could be a possible first step towards the creation of a drug to combat the virus that causes COVID-19. "I think there is a case for vaccinating the most vulnerable again with booster doses, but that still leaves the UK massively over-ordered in terms of the amount of vaccines that it has, and still conservatively leaves somewhere between 100 and 200 million doses that it could donate by the end of the year."
The OIE said the case was confirmed by a positive PCR result, but that there were"no other pets in the household" and the "case is considered resolved". It is believed to be an isolated incident.A union leader tells Sky News school staff are"optimistic and hopeful" they won't see the same level of disruption as last year.
The proposals, announced earlier this summer, have previously been criticised by politicians on both sides as well as leaders in the night time hospitality industry. Boris Johnson also previously faced a backlash within his own party over the possibility of domestic vaccine passports, with 43 Conservative MPs signing a declaration opposing them.Government accused of 'hit and hope' strategy as pupils return to school with fewer restrictions
Pupils will now just need to take a PCR test if they are in close contact with someone who has coronavirus - and only isolate if they themselves test positive. Ministers still intend to roll out a COVID-19 booster programme from September, officials have said, despite no official announcement yet being made.
