The Home Office has written to all of England’s fire services offering them the chance to make a Military Aid to Civil Authorities request – the official forum for asking toThe final decision will be made by the Ministry of Defence, which has asked the Home Office to co-ordinate all such requests rather than having individual authorities submitting them piecemeal.
Local services will also have to provide all training and equipment – but troops will not be allowed to enter burning buildings or attempt to rescue people while on duty, unless they are among the small number of full-time military firefighters. “It doesn’t make economic sense when you can employ resilience staff for a lot, lot less… We’ve already recruited resilience staff as a backup, just in case.”
