“We have had an incident where a member of the public was assaulted by a Labour councillor here'
A furious row has broken out at Hyndburn Council after Labour Party members were accused of homophobic behaviour by its leader.
Cllr Parkinson – who quit the party in March but remains council leader – told the meeting that Labour members had abused two former councillors who had also left the party in a public dispute. He told the meeting in Accrington Town Hall: “We have had an incident where a member of the public was assaulted by a Labour councillor here.“Then just weeks later a couple were abused by Labour members.
The motion to ask Hyndburn Council legal officers to ‘look into the possibility of all elected members being required to have enhanced DBS checks’ and publish the results on the council website was defeated after former senior police officers Cllr Patrick McGinley and Cllr Zak Khan opposed it.
