Mistaken child harm allegations: What went wrong in North East Lincolnshire?
North East Lincolnshire Council has been instructed to apologise and pay £1,500 to foster parents who were wrongly accused of harming a child.
The Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman determined that the council mishandled the investigation, causing the couple"distress, uncertainty, and reputational harm". In 2022, the child reiterated the claim, adding they felt restricted from speaking to professionals. A council investigation then substantiated the child's allegations of physical and emotional harm.
In the second instance, a man was restricted from seeing family members under a child protection plan after 12 alleged indecent child photos were found on his phone during a separate police investigation, which the Crown Prosecution Service later dropped.
