We compared Costa mince pies to a local bakery and the coffee chain was well and truly gazumped
Tis the season to be jolly. And the best way to do that is by stuffing your face with the festive mince pie.
I'd recently visited my local Costa and Starbucks to get my hands on the new Christmas drinks. Sadly there wasn't much to rave about them and despite the mass festive marketing surrounding them, I haven't gone back to get my Christmas spirit fill. Costa offered better results with a large glass dish filled with picture perfect mince pies standing on the counter just waiting to be bagged up. People often say homemade is best so to test that theory out I also popped into a local bakers, Rounds and Sons in Preston. It has it all; pies, pasties and plenty of sweet treats.
In reality, even the size wasn't much to go from and what I soon found was the less traditional shape which was flatter and had a star cut out of the top contained less filling. After my first bite I was already reaching for my cup of tea because the pasty was that dry. To look at, you'd think the pasty would have been somewhat undercooked and maybe even a little stodgy but it was perfect - these bakeries stick around for years for good reason. It wasn't too sweet but still had a hint of flavour that left enough room for the immense flavours of the filling to come through.
