Joshua Molnar was already cleared of murder and manslaughter in a criminal court following Yousef Makki's death
The 17-year-old Manchester Grammar School pupil died after being stabbed in the heart by his schoolfriend Joshua Molnar in Hale Barns on March 2, 2019. After a criminal trial at Manchester Crown Court in July 2019, Molnar, now 22, was cleared of murder and manslaughter.
After a campaign by Yousef's sister, Jade Akoum, the High Court later quashed the findings and ordered a second inquest with a new coroner. Today , that inquest concluded. But what does this mean? What is the difference between a finding in a criminal court and at an inquest? And what could happen next?
What can the coroner do following today's conclusion? The role of the coroner is now essentially over following a conclusion being delivered. Both Joshua Molnar and Adam Chowdhary have already been through the criminal justice system, with verdicts reached on all counts. What could happen next? Following the conclusion of an unlawful killing at the inquest, Yousef's family may decide to raise a civil case. In a civil hearing, similar to in an inquest, the burden is lesser than in a criminal court: ‘more likely than not’.
