Could the Conservatives – the self-appointed party of homeownership – be forced to become the party of social housing?
Today, most people in England own their own home. Those who do not, wish they did and fear it might never happen for them.
The new Conservative Housing Secretary, Michael Gove, does too and there is a growing sense among the more socially conscious Conservative MPs that the housing crisis is going to cause them trouble because younger generations are suffering which could, ultimately, hurt the party’s chances at the ballot box. has also found that support for the welfare state, including for social housing, has increased since the Coronavirus pandemic began.
And, if they do, it will cause problems for Labour who haven’t had a win in decades and, right now, are pledging to make social housing the second largest tenure after homeownership in the hope that this flagship housing policy could, once again, see them made at home in Number 10. If they do, mortgages could well become more affordable for wealthier first-time buyers, investors and buy-to-let landlords alike.
