Both Jeremy Hunt and Liz Truss have now taken their seats in the Commons.Ms Mordaunt says that there are "very serious matters as well as economic matters that are in the PM’s intray".Ms Mordaunt says the is not allowed to disclose why the PM is not here. "I have asked if I can, I am being very genuine with the House on this matter, I hope she will be able to join us later on this afternoon.
Ms Mordaunt replies: "I have great affection for the Honourable Lady and I'm sure the whole House appreciates the question, but the PM and her chancellor and her Cabinet will be taking these decisions in the future, and the decision she has taken over the weekend, although personally difficult for her, is the right one for the nation."Labour MP Stella Creasy suggests that the PM is 'cowering under her desk and hoping for it all to go away'.
"In contrast, what the Right Hon Gentleman [Sir Keir] has done today at this most serious moment took no courage or judgement or regard to the national interest."Sir Keir asks how the country can get the stability it needs "when all the government offers is grotesque chaos" and "instead of leadership we have this utter vacuum".Ms Mordaunt says she is 'quietly confident' that the leader of the opposition "will not have his 15 minutes of fame".
