Slavery Remembrance Day inspires city to continue with fight against racism and inequality in society

READ MORE: 'This is not just a day, this is our whole life. This is about us - this is about our ancestors' Michelle Charters, CEO of Kuumba Imani Millennium Centre and trustee at NML, said: "I am a big believer in learning every day in different ways. The events will get people talking to each other and asking questions.
"That helps us orient ourselves in the world today. It is very important we have an honest look at history for everyone - for working people, women, Africans, all human beings. When great crimes are committed there has to be repair. We have to find ways to deal with these legacies and find measures to deal with them."
Michelle Peterkin-Walker, a digital artist and activist in her beloved Toxteth, told the ECHO ahead of the walk that the African diaspora was "invisible" in Liverpool, despite being the oldest African community in Europe. She added: "Slavery Remembrance Day allows us to understand there are still things like institutional racism.
