A crime writer who considered assisted suicide after a childhood cold sore turned out to stem from a rare condition so painful it felt like her head was stuck in a “mechanical vice” has now become an award-winning author, after her wife and family begged her to fight for her life.
“My mum kept taking me to GP over and over,” she said. “Then my bottom lip started swelling up and I was eventually referred to the hospital but back then, they didn’t have a diagnosis.” “I never imagined myself as an author because people like me weren’t the kind of people that wrote books,” she said. “I was the first person in my family to go to university and I thought being a writer was like wanting to be an actor or singer.”
They “begged” Christie to examine other options and in 2015, she flew to Los Angeles, California, to receive stem cell replacement therapy, which was not available on the NHS at the time and cost £15,000. Christie’s “mental clarity” slowly returned and she was able to start writing and reading again. “It was just incredible,” she said.
