To celebrate Halloween, the Daily Record has rounded up some classic Scottish games and traditions that you might remember from your childhood — from apple dookin' to tumshie lanterns.

It is now just a week until Halloween, and Scots all over the country will be frantically trying to put together, which originates from the ancient Gaelic festival of Samhain. It is no surprise, then, that over the years we have developed a lot of unique customs and traditions.fell out of fashion centuries ago and are long forgotten, others are still practiced around the country — though to a much smaller extent than they once were.

One Halloween tradition that seems to have fallen out of fashion over the years involves tasty treacle scones or buns. Similar to apple dookin', the game saw these treats — dripping with sticky black treacle — tied from the ceiling with string. Participants would then have to eat them without using their hands, which would invariably lead to a massive mess. If you ever took part in this hilarious game, you will know that the fun was undoubtedly worth it though.

While guising is still very much a popular activity, in a lot of ways it was very different back in the day. For starters, there was none of this buying complete costume nonsense. We had to make do with what we had around the house, which in many cases led to unintentionally hilarious outfits that looked nothing like what they were supposed to be. Also, these days most people will let kids just tell a joke for their treat.

Autumn is arguably the most beautiful time of the year for a walk, and one Scottish beauty spot in particular is a great place to head if you want to immerse yourself in the colours of the season. When the temperature drops and frost starts to form, nothing compares to a cosy woodland retreat, and one on the shores of Loch Lomond is currently available to book for half price.
