🔴 Chinese ambassador summoned after arrest and beating of BBC journalist
The Foreign Office has called on the Chinese ambassador for a ‘full and thorough explanation’ on the treatment of a BBC journalist after he was arrested and beaten while covering an anti-lockdown protest in Shanghai
Zheng Zeguang is being summoned to Whitehall to give a “full and thorough explanation” on the treatment of Edward Lawrence by the Chinese authorities on Sunday.when he was arrested and “beaten and kicked by the police” according to the BBC. No.10 condemned the “shocking and unacceptable” arrest on Monday, while Foreign Secretary James Cleverly described the incident as “deeply disturbing”. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s official spokesman said that “journalists must be able to do their jobs without fear or intimidation”.
“In response, we are calling in the Chinese ambassador to make clear the unacceptable and unwarranted nature of these actions, the importance of freedom of speech, and to demand a full and thorough explanation.”
