Chelsea have signed goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic from MLS side New England Revolution. The 23-year-old joins the Premier League side for a fee worth €16million (£13.6m, $17.4m) plus €2m in add-ons. also previously reported that the west London club opened talks with the New England Revolution and made an opening bid for Petrovic, as well as the MLS side turning down offers from FC Nantes and Nottingham Forest for the goalkeeper at the end of July.
New England didn’t want to lose their star goalkeeper as they push for a title this year, but the record fee plus Petrovic’s desire for the move got the deal done. Petrovic has made 48 appearances in New England after signing in 2022 and quickly established himself after departed for Arsenal. He was voted second in MLS Goalkeeper of the Year last season, despite playing only 21 of 34 matches after joining midseason. He was named a 2023 MLS All-Star.
Petrovic has two caps with the Serbia national team. Before New England, he broke through at Serbian side FK Cukaricki. The move sets a new MLS transfer record for most expensive goalkeeper, beating Chelsea’s deal to sign Gaga Slonina from thePetrovic’s deal is among the most expensive outbound MLS transfers of all time.
