For Chase Elliott, this year's disappointment is likely a mere blip, a footnote in what otherwise is an extraordinary career.

Since 2016, when he first entered Cup on a full-time basis, Elliott had made the playoffs every season, doing so either by winning a regular-season race or by points accumulation that earned him a wild-card berth. And over this seven-year stretch, the Hendrick Motorsports driver has emerged as one of NASCAR’s premier talents, winning the 2020 championship and two other times advancing to the championship playoff round.
“I think they went through a lot this year,” Hendrick Motorsports president Jeff Andrews said. “If you look at what happened earlier in the year with Chase’s injury, those kinds of things have a big effect on the team and the sync of the team. I’m proud of Alan and his guys. I mean, they fought through an awful lot this year.”
Elliott and Gustafson cited no singular reason as to why the No. 9 team underwhelmed. Some of it was self-inflicted, some of it not. Gustafson quipped that if he knew exactly what his team was missing on the performance side, he would’ve moved heaven and earth to find it.Qualifying was one aspect that often proved problematic. Elliott’s 17.5 average starting position is the highest of his career, making the beginning of races a challenge as he attempts to work his way forward.
“Hasn’t been what I would want by any means,” Elliott said. “Certainly going to be some lessons taken from it, and I think we’ll be better for it on the other end.” Both Elliott and Gustafson are adamant in their support for one another. This is reinforced in that they don’t bicker on the radio or offer any other telltale signs that after eight years together their relationship has run its course. After climbing out of his car Saturday night, Elliott fist-bumped Gustafson and told him “Good job” with the two then cordially chatting for several minutes.
