She has been outspoken on women’s rights and equality, in 2019 publicly denouncing her own experience of being slut-shamed, having been defined by the press in her early 20s to her romantic relationships. A snide, bitchy song written when she was a heartbroken teenager is bound not to fit with her values now as a wise 33-year-old – of course she wants to set the record straight.
Again, this is unquestionably the right call. But the difference with “Better Than Revenge” is that the alteration barely touches the sides. Although she has tweaked the line that listeners find the most outwardly offensive, she has honoured the feelings she had at the time, keeping the essence of the song – which is about tearing another woman down out of jealousy, something all of us have been guilty of at one point or other – the same, in keeping with the spirit of the re-record project.
We are in an age of hypersensitivity to slurs such as the “mattress” line, and over the past decade,although it is tempting to think we are still stuck in the same culture wars loops, progress has been made in raising awareness of how and why they matter. Swift’s “Picture to Burn” lyric was clearly thoughtless rather than hateful, but it’s important that it was changed, and would, rightly, never get written now.
