Progression to permanent AF in patient with paroxysmal AF at baseline . Credit:A new research paper titled"Cardiovascular events and death after catheter ablation in very old patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation" has been published inCatheter ablation of atrial fibrillation is recommended for selected older patients. However, the preventive effects of AF ablation on cardiovascular events and death remain unclear, especially in older patients.
The researchers explain,"We conducted a prospective cohort study of consecutive patients with NVAF aged ≥80 years and using direct oral anticoagulants .", strokes and systemic embolisms , acute coronary syndrome , and sudden cardiac death and cardiovascular death as AHF/SSE/ACS-related death and SCD. They compared the 3-year incidence of cardiovascular events and death between the patients who underwent AF ablation and those who received medical therapy only .
Among the 782 NVAF patients using DOACs, propensity score matching provided 208 patients in each group. The ablation group had a significantly lower 3-year incidence of cardiovascular events and death than the medication group: cardiovascular events, 24 vs. 43 , log-rank P=0.009 and hazard ratio 0.52 0.32–0.86) and cardiovascular deaths, 5 vs. 15 , log-rank P=0.019 and HR 0.32 .
"In very old NVAF patients using DOACs, those who underwent AF ablation had a lower incidence of bothMore information: Keisuke Okawa et al, Cardiovascular events and death after catheter ablation in very old patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation,

Saliva test could detect early signs of cardiovascular diseasePeriodontitis, a common oral health problem that involves infected gums, is linked to cardiovascular disease. Scientists studying the inflammation that precedes periodontitis have found that higher inflammation, reflected by higher levels of white blood cells in saliva, is linked to less healthy arteries and a potentially higher risk of cardiovascular disease even in young, apparently healthy people.

Protein score, from a single plasma sample, predicts atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseaseIn a large retrospective analysis using measurements of thousands of plasma proteins in primary and secondary event populations, scientists from deCODE genetics and collaborators from U.S., Denmark and Iceland, reported today in JAMA how they employed AI to develop a protein score to predict major atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease events (ASCVD).
