Carlos Sainz ‘very disappointed’ with FIA right of review dismissal, penalty opinion unchangedThe FIA has dismissed the ‘right of review’ appeal from Ferrari over the penalty issued to Carlos Sainz in Melbourne, which has left a sour taste for the driver.
The stewards had deemed Sainz to be at fault for a late collision with Fernando Alonso at the Australian Grand Prix, one which sent Alonso into a spin and had seemingly ended the Aston Martin driver’s podium streak at the start of F1 2023. Alonso would be spared though as the swift appearance of red flags after that chaotic restart returned the order to how it was, though Sainz found himself dropping from P4 to P12 after the stewards dished out a five-second time penalty.
Ferrari had met virtually with the stewards on Tuesday morning to appeal that penalty, but it was ruled that the team had failed to provide sufficient evidence to overturn the decision. It means that Australian GP result stands then for Sainz, a verdict which has left him feeling “very disappointed” as he confirmed that his stance on the punishment has not changed in the two weeks which have followed the race.“Two weeks later, I still think the penalty is too disproportionate and I believe it should have at least been reviewed on the basis of the evidence and reasoning we have presented.
