Government officials project that the fire season could stretch into autumn because of widespread drought-like conditions.About 140,000 sq km of land, roughly the size of New York State, has been scorched nationwide, with smoky haze extending as far as the US east coast. A wildfire burning out of control in Yellowknife, the capital of NWT, has turned the remote interior city into a smoky ghost town with almost all of its 20,000 residents evacuated.
