A by-election to replace a Manchester councillor who resigned amid rumours she lives 200 miles away will be taking place this week. Julia Baker Smith stood down as a Labour councillor representing Brooklands ward in July.
Among the candidates standing in the by-election is a former Bournemouth councillor who stood for the seat last year while still representing residents more than 250 miles away. Conservative candidate Norman Decent, who moved to Manchester during the pandemic, is no longer a Kinson councillor. He will be standing as a Trafford council candidate next year.He missed out on a council seat after losing to the Greens by just 146 votes – the narrowest margin at the last local elections in Manchester.
Julia Baker Smith served as a councillor on the Isle of Wight until she resigned two years before being elected in Manchester. The Labour councillor said she split her time between the Isle of Wight and Manchester where she worked. After resigning as a Manchester councillor on July 26, she said: "It has been a privilege to serve the people of Brooklands, and work with a great local community who support each other so well. Due to the serious illness of a close family member I have had to make the difficult decision to stand down as I am no longer able to commit the time I would want to my council duties."
