The village, which has around 1,200 residents, currently has no supermarket
A butcher has unveiled plans to open a farm shop for villagers who live half an hour away from the nearest supermarket.
Jack Wood has submitted an application to Rossendale Borough Council to build a single-story shop on land next to Higher Old Clough Farm in the village of Weir. with the nearest being a 30 minute walk away in Bacup. Almost 17 per cent of Weir's population are pensioners with Mr Wood arguing that the village is "chronically underserved by local facilities that are accessible for non-drivers". He hopes to provide the village's only retail shop aimed at those who are unable to drive to neighbouring towns. In his application Mr Wood said he plans to stock the shop with local produce from neighbouring farms.
"Therefore, it will not adversely affect the vitality and viability of any neighbouring centre. There are no retail facilities nearby. It would appear that the proposed retail use would provide a retail offering not currently catered for within Weir or within a 10-minute walking distance." Mr Wood argues that "the public benefits associated with the provision of a retail unit for the village would far outweigh any limited impact on the rural character of the immediate area". The shop, which will be just 300sqm, would have limited impact on neighbouring properties or the rural surroundings.
