Extremist group al-Shabab has claimed responsibility for the attack.
On Sunday, Al-Shabab said in a broadcast on its own radio that its fighters attacked the Villa Rose, which has a restaurant popular with government and security officials.Abdi Hassan, a government worker who lives near the hotel, said he believes several government officials were inside the hotel when the attack started.
He said some people were seen leaping across the outside wall of the compound to get to safety while others were rescued,"We were shaken," Ahmed Abdullahi, who lives close to the scene, said.In August, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud pledged "total war" against Al-Shabab following an attack on another Mogadishu hotel where more than 20 people died.
