Bridgeless in Grimsby: Residents hope for a change of heart Grimsby

The decision to remove and not replace a footbridge, which provided residents with"access to a green space" in Grimsby, has been labelled"a shame".

“The bridge was falling into disrepair, some of the woodwork was starting to rot,” said Cllr Holland. “I think things came to a head when some of the big planks were removed.” Drawing a comparison with the £3.3m cost of the Riverhead Square regeneration project, he wants the council to eventually replace the footbridge. “The residents of Wybers don’t ask for a huge amount,” said Cllr Holland, suggesting a comeback of “one of the few things that gives them access to a green space”.

He hopes that, as a fair compromise, the council will agree to reinstate the footbridge next year, given residents’ views and budget constraints. A North East Lincolnshire Council spokesperson confirmed budget limits were behind the decision to not replace the bridge. They said”The authority has finite budgets, and it must look at the best use of Environmental Services spend across the whole of North East Lincolnshire.
