“Roger and I will tell you that we kind of know what he might say. Because we know him so well. He’s like a brother. I often think, ‘I don’t think Freddie would put up with this.’ But Freddie’s with us.” 🎙️ shaun_curran speaks with DrBrianMay

Brian May: ‘I often think, Freddie wouldn’t put up with this’

He picks up on the post-truth theme. “God, truth has gone out the window in this century. Nobody knows what the truth is anymore. It seems like nobody cares. I find the world a very strange and screwed up place. I don’t feel comfortable in the world as it is now.” May is on video call from his Surrey home. Behind him on the wall is a framed collection of discs commemorating six million sales of Queen’s“That’s out of date now,” he says; it’s now sold over seven million. The 1981 release is the best-selling album of all time in the UK. “I would much prefer that people get into all the individual albums and see the whole depth of what we were putting out there,” he says. “But I guess you learn to be proud of having hits.

“A lot of people do,” says May, “which is quite funny. I was getting letters that said ‘Sir Brian’.” Still, he was surprised to receive the gong. “Because I’m doing stuff all the time which the Government doesn’t like. I fight for the rights of wild animals, particularly, and certainly people like Boris Johnson would find me a complete irritation. I think it only happened because Boris went away.”

Creative tension in Queen was par for the course – “I walked out of the band many times in the studio thinking I would never come back, but inside my head thinking, ‘Yeah, you will’” – but the making of 1982 album“Because Queen is very competitive, always has been. Every note, every nuance is always argued. And I guess that’s the strength of the band, but it’s stressful after a while.”

“It was like jumping off a high diving board.” The sci-fi rock of the title track was May’s version of the theme tune to his young son’s favourite TV show, an English remake of Japanese puppet showMay’s own original song, the blues rock of “Let Me Out”, more than hinted at his frustrations with Queen; the collaborative “Blues Breaker”, inspired by May’s hero Eric Clapton, is a rolling 12-minute blues-heavy exploration.
