The iconic tree also featured prominently in the 1991 Kevin Costner movie Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

Brian Blessed, who starred in the film as Robin Hood’s father Lord Locksley, has voiced his sadness at the felling but is hopeful it could survive. The 86-year-old former president of the Council for National Parks suggested giving it ‘company’ to help it regrow. The Sycamore Gap, next to historic Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland, was mysterious felled overnight programme.

‘You know, give it company and plant another tree a good 200 yards or 300 yards to keep it company, it will talk to it, it will help it.’More:
