Ex-Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson is currently coached by Steven Gerrard in Saudi Arabia
Brendan Rodgers has defended Jordan Henderson over his Saudi Arabia move after significant criticism that has come the way of the former Liverpool captain.
His choice to sign for Steven Gerrard's side prompted major backlash from members of the LGBTQ+ community, who felt betrayed by someone who had championed their right to freedom only to then head for a country where homosexuality is criminalised. Offering a less critical assessment of this transfer deal, Rodgers is of the view the England international was well within his rights to sign for Al-Ettifaq and may have gone to Saudi to avoid facing the Reds in competitive fixtures.
"But Jordan I know extremely well and I know the love he had for Liverpool. He was at the stage of his career where he probably wasn’t going to be the first name on the team sheet anymore. At 33 years of age, he’s won absolutely everything.
