Campaigners and MPs have warned that children are being punished for wearing the wrong uniform to school as parents struggle to afford expensive items

“Antiquated” uniform policies are “excluding” working class children from school communities, an MP has said amid reports of children being punished for wearing supermarket-branded items to school.by limiting the number of branded items a school could include in its policy., leaving some parents forced to fork out hundreds of pounds on new uniforms that include items such as branded PE kits.

“Sometimes people use the language over wanting to maintain standards in our schools, but I do worry that some schools want to exclude particular children from particular communities, working class communities, via this antiquated approach to school uniforms,” he said. Natalie Frankland, who runs Hartlepool ReLoved Clothing, which provides second-hand school uniforms for free to parents, said she was contacted last week by a mother who had received a call from her child’s school telling her the child was in the wrong PE kit as it was not branded.

“When you look at the cost of a secondary school uniform alone you’re looking at like £400 for everything they need – even with the uniform bill that came into place,” she said.
