James Philliskirk was a usually cheeky, smiley 16-month-old when he was sent to A&E after falling seriously ill but his parents were told to take him home - now they are fighting for change

A cheeky tot tragically died after his sepsis was twice misdiagnosed as chicken pox. James Philliskirk was just 16 months old when he became clearly unwell.

Helen told how her world was turned upside down in May 2022 when James fell ill with what was eventually found to be sepsis brought on by a severe Group A Strep skin infection. He had only recently returned to nursery after his previous illness at the time he fell seriously ill again. This call was played in the court as part of a four-day inquest. Photographs showing how ill James looked while in hospital were provided by Helen and Daniel, with clear photos of the large lesion on his right wrist.

A prevention of future deaths report published by the coroner last week concluded hospital staff had ignored guidelines by not escalating James' case. Helen said: "The facts are there now, it is all in the prevention of further deaths report that's been published this week. As the jury were sent out for their deliberations the coroner gave them the option of using the term neglect as part of their conclusions, which they unanimously chose to use.

Helen said she hopes she can help the hospital change, despite the pain she feels when speaking about James' case. She said: "I've attended meetings with staff and we've talked about our experience firsthand to them in the hope it will have an impact. Every time we do there is a cost to our mental health, but for us, we feel that the benefits are far greater than that cost.
