Tory rebels are piling pressure on Boris Johnson following two brutal by-election defeats. The Prime Minister’s own MPs are questioning his ability to win votes, and his aspirations to serve three terms as PM, have inflamed tensions further.
It comes after former Conservative leader Michael Howard also urged Mr Johnson to step down for the good of the party and the nation, and called on the Cabinet to consider resigning to force him out.Speaking on Saturday, the peer said: “[Mr Johnson’s] biggest asset has always been his ability to win votes but I’m afraid yesterday’s results make it clear that he no longer has that ability.
Senior Tory MP Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown said there were “difficult decisions” to be made about the future of the party. But Mr Johnson continues to shrug off the mounting criticism, and is aiming to distract doubters by showing his strength as a global leader on the world stage this week. The PM will then travel on to Madrid for the first full meeting of Nato member states since Russia’s invasion.
