Anyone wishing to see the so-called “New Hospitals Programme” through rose-tinted specs, let alone via VR technology, should read the cold, hard facts of the latestThe independent watchdog found that of the 40 new hospitals planned for 2030, just 32 would be built. Government “has not achieved good value for money” for the £1.1bn spent on the programme so far, it said.
Worryingly, it warned that this mismatch could exacerbate capacity problems where new hospitals were replacing existing facilities. Given that one of the biggest lessons that may come out of the Covid public inquiry is that our hospitals need spare capacity, the idea of continuing the seat-of-your-pants, “just-in-time” management of years gone by now looks even more risky.
