The bombshell messages showed the then Tory prime minister questioning whether another lockdown was necessary
Boris Johnson opposed another national lockdown on the grounds covid deaths largely affected the over 80s.
A WhatsApp message shown to the UK Covid Inquiry revealed the then prime minister saying he was “rocked” by the data. The message was read out on the morning Johnson’s former adviser Lee Cain gave evidence to the judge-led pandemic probe. In October 2020, after the first lockdown, Johnson and Cain exchanged messages on the approach for the future.
Johnson wrote: “I must say I have been slightly rocked by some of the data on covid fatalities. The median age is 82 - 81 for men 85 for women. That is above life expectancy. So get Covid and live longer.”“And I no longer buy all this NHS overwhelmed stuff. Folks I think we may need to recalibrate.”After Cain asked how this would affect policy, Johnson said: “It shows we don’t go for nation wide lockdown.
