In the UK, there is sadly a widespread notion that only a certain type of person can do maths. From my school teaching practice, I can tell you that there is no such thing as a maths brain.
Obviously, the devil will be in the detail of this scheme. As a teacher, I think that earlier intervention in maths is often most effective. When pupils feel empowered in my classes, I know they will go on to use the crucial numeracy skills they’ve learned with pride. However, I welcome having a senior political figure cheerleading for the subject.
However, like the human pursuit of creativity and knowledge in the arts, literature and music, there is an innate beauty in the underlying structures of mathematics such as prime numbers. Maybe as educators we need to highlight this more. Baking a cake using a recipe? You are using maths. Calculating potential league positions for your football team? You are using maths. Trying to plan a busy day’s schedule? You are using maths. Again, it’s good to remember that you’re probably decent at doing at least some of these things. And so, you have numeracy skills that you can work on.
