Pupils at the specialist school have reached 110 as of summer 2022

An award-winning Blackpool school is set for investment of nearly £5m to build new classrooms after pupil numbers have tripled in just five years.

A report to councillors says pupil numbers reached 110 this summer, which is three times the number five years ago, and is partly due to children being able to live with more complex conditions thanks to better medical intervention. The report adds: “Despite additional building works being undertaken during that time to create extra space at the school, the capacity of the existing building is now over-stretched.

The report adds: “The proposed expansion at Highfurlong School would help to ensure that Blackpool Council can meet the needs of children with complex physical and medical disabilities.”
