The Blackpool striker came out as gay in May of this year
Blackpool FC footballer Jake Daniels has opened up on what it has been like be the first male footballer to come out as gay since 1990. The Blackpool striker came out in May 2022 and became the only openly gay active professional footballer in Britain at just 17 years old.
In an interview with British Vogue, Daniels talked about what life has been like since he made the decision to open up about his sexuality earlier this year. Since then, he has found himself being approached by gushing strangers, full of adulation. He told Vogue: “I ball-boy’d for Blackpool last week. I [found myself] signing stuff and taking pictures. All my mates were walking past going, ‘Oh, my God, he’s so big time!’”
Daniels said that the reaction to his initial interview in May with Sky Sports was 'overwhelmingly positive', with huge football names such as England Captain Harry Kane messaging to show his support.
