'It has always been about the celebration of the talents and lives of people who are often forgotten'

BlackFest returns to some of the city's most famous venues this month with live music, theatre, film, poetry, visual arts and fashion exhibitions. Now in its sixth year, the award-winning festival will open at the Museum Of Liverpool on Sunday, August 27, with Djembe Drumming, Afrodance Academy, and stalls from local Black-owned businesses.

"It's really about bridging that gap and making sure that people are seen and heard and cultures are represented appropriately. In 2018, when we did our first BlackFest, we were just a bunch of artists wanting to put some shows on and make changes in the art sector. Our real impetus was to make a cultural impact and a change in ecology in Liverpool, and more integration in the arts community.

She said: "We're now welcoming big stars like YolanDa Brown, and we're so happy to be welcoming her to the city. Along with that. we're still putting our local artists front and centre. BlackFest 2023 welcomes an enormous line-up of ambitious artists, including award-winning rapper and playwright Ash Nugent, R&B musician Satin Beige, and World Record-breaking beatboxer Testament. Poets and fashion designers from both Liverpool and Manchester will showcase their talents, overcoming the cities' historic rivalry.
