A Blackburn Rovers fan has been banned from football for three years after racially abusing a staff member.

Bradley Meikleham, of Ratcliffe Street, Darwen, used racist language towards the victim at half-time of Rovers' derby clash with Blackpool at Ewood Park. Lancashire Police said the 20-year-old was declined when paying for refreshments and the member of staff refused to hand the items over. Meikleham responded by swearing and and using racist language towards the staff member. The incident happened on April 9 and at Blackburn Magistrates Court yesterday , Meikleham pleaded guilty to an offence of racially aggravated public disorder. He was given a three-year football banning order, ordered to play the staff member £100 compensation, pay costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £34. Meikleham’s banning order contains additional matchday conditions.

PC Byron Worrall, Football Risk Football management officer, said: “Racist behaviour at football grounds will not be tolerated and the three-year banning order received by Bradley Meikleham shows that such offences are dealt with robustly by the courts. “People are entitled to feel safe at football stadiums, whether they are attending games or working there.”
