While it has remained incredibly tight-lipped over the precise guest list, Egypt's Prime Minster Mostafa Madbouly is known to be in Beijing, as are senior figures from the government of the UAE and crucial players in the Middle East.

The gathering in Beijing of senior leaders from over 140 countries has been months in the planning, but the timing now feels very prescient. Ostensibly, the purpose is to celebrate 10 years of China's flagship 'One Belt One Road' initiative. It's a programme that's seen China invest more than $1tn to build roads, bridges, dams and railways in countries that wouldn't otherwise have been able to afford them.
