'This was a very mean offence where the defendant deliberately targeted his brother-in-law, who was out of the country'
A Belfast man who forged his brother-in-law’s identity to apply for finance for a Mercedes van avoided being sent to jail today .
Belfast Crown Court heard that in January 2017 the injured party - Deery’s sister’s partner - left Northern Ireland to go to Australia. He was also contacted by a finance company seeking arrears on a finance agreement - and after speaking to the company he was informed finance had been sought in his name to buy a van from a business in Mallusk.
The financial loss amounted to £13,000 and the Mercedes van was never located with Judge McColgan commenting that “there is some doubt as to whether it ever even existed”. The injured party also said “I have not spoken to James Deery properly in years but pass myself with him in family circumstances” and spoke of the lasting financial implications of Deery’s fraud.
