City Hall officers and Stormont division warn of screen's impact on listed building setting

An application to erect a large digital advertising screen in historic Cornmarket has been pushed through by DUP and Sinn Féin, against recommendations by both Belfast Council and Stormont.

The council officer report states: “The removal of the advertisement on Castle Lane is beneficial for this street and setting of Nos. 1-5 Castle Lane when approaching Arthur Square from the Cornmarket and Ann Street. Council officers concluded that the application went against planning policy. The report states: “The proposal is not sympathetic to the essential characteristics, scale, height, massing and alignment of the adjacent listed buildings by way of its scale, form, materials and detailing. It would result in a competing focus to the listed buildings, drawing the eye away from them and diluting their prominence and importance in the street-scene.

“As a company we make proceeds of 50 percent of our profits to the LFT charitable trust, which then gives that money away to local NI based charities, particularly the smaller type of charity. We are focused on £10-20,000 grants, which can make a big difference.”
