The public broadcaster has been criticised for suggesting that an explosion at a Gaza hospital appeared to be the result of an Israeli bombing, a claim which has since been heavily disputed

Multiple Government sources have privately accused the broadcaster of rushing to judgement after a reporter speculated that an explosion at a hospital in Gaza believed to have killed hundreds of people could have been the result of an Israeli bomb attack.

Lucy Frazer, the Culture Secretary, has discussed the issue directly with BBC Director-General Tim Davie. Another Government source warned that repeating claims made by the Hamas-led administration in Gaza risked making diplomatic efforts harder by inflaming passions on all sides. “Hamas uses the media as a weapon of war,” a different insider said.

Ministers publicly criticised the broadcaster and social media commentators over the initial reporting of the explosion at the al-Ahli Arab Hospital. Penny Mordaunt, the Leader of the House of Commons, added: “I think the BBC does focus on these things to a very large degree but we know that sometimes it doesn’t get things right… so I’m sure they would want to kick the tyres and ensure that anyone listening to a BBC outlet is being given the best possible information.”
