Special footwear was made in Northants for the 1953 expedition

BBC Countryfile visited Kettering on the 80th anniversary of Edmund Hillary climbing Mount Everest. The episode saw presenter Ellie Harrison being put through her paces at the SATRA Technology Centre on Henson Way.

"To test it we put our hands inside. It's sometimes the best way of doing things. If they get wet, take them home and don't put them in front of the fire or the oven or the microwave to dry them out. That will probably ruin them. Other methods are testing its durability for extensive walking - running it in a simulator which replicates the show walking 50,000 steps or a 50-mile walk.

SATRA worked closely with the Everest expedition team in 1953, developing special footwear for the whole team says researcher David Smith. Back then, one person said the shoe looked like a "blown-up football boot" due to its chunky design. "These boots are only designed to be worn for the last 23,000 feet of the climb and equipped with this disposable outer rubberized layer. It was quite innovative at the time. You would wear that at lower altitudes where there was still water.

Finally, presenter Ellie took on the climate chamber to find out how effective their outdoor clothing is at braving different temperatures. David added: "We can control the temperature down to minus 40 or up to plus 50 with variable humidity in between. The Countryfile presenter, who forgot her hat for the challenge, said she "hates being cold" and "struggled to feel her fingers" during the challenge.
