A barrister has sparked debate online after urging women to give babies their surname instead of the father’s 👇

platform X, formerly known as Twitter, to share her opinion and users had a lot to say in responce.

Her post read: ‘A message to pregnant women — please give the baby your surname. You carried a baby for 9 months, gave birth, and will be responsible for that child for the rest of your life. ‘When you’re registering the baby ask yourself: why is the father’s surname more important than yours?’Some users point-blank disagreed with the sentiment and argued that there were many reasons to give a child the second name of their father.

‘Because when we married, we joined families and I took his name. We are one and we are BOTH responsible for the child. This is actually quite simple,’ wrote one user. You carried a baby for 9 months, gave birth, and will be responsible for that child for the rest of your life. When you’re registering the baby ask yourself: why is the father’s surname more important than yours? While a third noted: ‘I don’t mind my sons having their dad’s name.
