Ministers have ramped up pressure on the Met to request the planned march is banned – but a former police commander warned doing so could lead to more people turning out in protest
Government sources did not rule out the prospect of the laws being reviewed if police did not believe the event reached the threshold to be deemed a risk. “To ban the event will lead to more resources being required. The police wouldn’t do it because they know that it’s not possible to do that.”He said the Met “wouldn’t be able to cope”, adding: “They won’t be able to arrest their way out of this.”
And he suggested Ms Braverman was trying to use the protest as part of a future party leadership bid.Ms Braverman is planning to meet with national police chiefs as part of a wider exercise to ensure plans to tackle significant public disorder are robust, the Home Office said.
