MPs have warned that plans to bar parliamentarians accused of sexual offences from the estate could lead to “vexatious complains” eleanormia reports:
“Inevitably, there could be a political element to complaints. There’s every potential for someone to try and use that politically against someone whose policies they don’t like,” they added.
Other concerns raised by MPs related to the anonymity of the accused and accusers, amid warnings that implementing bans could lead to the parties involved being identified. In May 2022, the Procedure Committee, which consists of 17 MPs from all political parties, decided not to go ahead with an inquiry into plans similar to those proposed last week claiming it would risk breaching the confidentiality of those involved.
“You could say to the judge and the jury that they obviously think this person is guilty because they’ve been suspended from parliament. I think that is something I can see happening – cases getting thrown out over this,” one member of the committee toldMPs also questioned whether the current plans could damage constituents’ representation in Parliament, with one backbench Tory MP arguing that barring an MP from speaking in the Chamber for months at a time was “potentially problematic”.
This was echoed by another Tory MP, who said their right to attend Parliament without impediment “goes back to the 1300s” and allows them to “speak on behalf of our constituents”.
