Liz Truss was determined to remain a blank slate during the Tory leadership contest. That can only last so long. Soon enough you’re judged by your actions – and the Prime Minister pinballed from one extreme to the other, trying to do too much too quickly without winning a mandate from the public or from her own colleagues in Parliament.
Ms Truss has already felt the blunt impact of economic reality colliding with her ideas. On Tuesday, political reality will show its face., then tour groups of truculent backbenchers. Pride must be swallowed. She is trying to stop the next Tory rebellion – with MPs refusing to support a squeeze on benefits.
A climbdown from Ms Truss is inevitable so she would be well advised to get on with it and seize the initiative. The PM is already carving her way across thin ice: enough Conservative MPs have made clear they will rebel if benefits are cut in real terms.
