“They showed a Vikings fan all dressed up in purple, with a wig and some kind of unusual hair, his face was painted and at halftime, I felt so sad for that guy,” Eayrs said. “I have no idea what he does for a job or whatever, but I mean, obviously based on his attire, it was really important for him to come and support the team. And I’m sitting here thinking, this is going to ruin the holidays for a whole bunch of people from the state.
“You could imagine the feeling that you have being on the wrong side of that, because the locker room is basically a tomb, and everybody is thinking about what could have been, because we literally had a game taken away from us,” Eayrs said. “And the thing that I remember most about the entire game was going out to the team bus and I was walking out and I may get emotional here, but there was a dad and his son in a wheelchair.
“I used to call them Twilight Zone games, and I’d say the only thing missing was the weird music and the Rod Serling narration,” Eayrs said. “It is almost like an out-of-body experience, positively or negatively. When you’re on the down side, you are trying all these things, and honest to God, it is like a runaway locomotive coming down the tracks and you are doing everything you can, but you are unable to stop it.
