Valentino - one of the industry’s super brands - has just announced they will no longer use angora in their products, starting with the autumn / winter 2022 collection.
This super soft fibre comes from the hair of angora rabbits. Their fur is shorn, or cut, off before it’s turned into yarn and then woven into anything from jumpers, jackets, gloves, hats or scarves. Angora is silky and the hairs are finer than cashmere.
Female rabbits produce the most fur so males are often killed at birth and baby rabbits are shorn from 8 weeks old, with hair removal taking place every three months for the rest of their lives. While pet rabbits in the UK live for between 8-12 years, one farmer told PETA that 60% of farmed angora rabbits die after only one or two years.
